OVERVIEW

What is liposuction?

Liposuction permanently removes stubborn pockets of fat through small, hidden incisions using a thin tube (cannula). It is a contouring procedure, not a weight loss method: the ideal candidate is close to a stable weight but has areas that resist diet and exercise. At NewMe it takes 1 to 3 hours under general anaesthetic at Anatolia Hospital in Antalya, and most UK patients stay about 5 days.

Does the fat come back? Removed fat cells do not grow back, so with a stable weight your new contour lasts. And if you want curves moved rather than removed, the harvested fat can be transferred in the same operation — see our Brazilian butt lift.

TECHNIQUES

Which liposuction technique is right for me?

Your surgeon recommends the technique that fits your areas, skin quality and goals — not a one-size-fits-all machine.

Liposuction techniques compared
TechniqueHow it worksUsually suits
Classic tumescentFluid is injected to reduce bleeding, then fat is removed by hand with a fine cannulaOne or two focused areas
VASER (ultrasound)Ultrasound energy loosens fat before removal, gentler on surrounding tissueFibrous areas such as the back or male chest, and fine definition
Lipo 360°The whole trunk — abdomen, waist, flanks and back — in one sessionA complete, balanced midsection
HD sculptingHigh-definition contouring that brings out the underlying muscle shapeLean candidates with good skin quality

IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU?

Am I a candidate for liposuction?

Skin quality decides — if liposuction alone would leave you with loose skin, we tell you before you book, not after.

✓ You have localised fat that resists diet and exercise

✓ You are at or near a stable weight — liposuction is contouring, not weight loss

✓ Your skin has good elasticity, so it can shrink back to the new contour

✓ You are a non-smoker, or willing to stop at least 4 weeks before and after surgery

Liposuction or tummy tuck compared
Your situationBest fitWhy
Stubborn fat, firm skin, no loose foldsLiposuctionRemoves fat; firm skin shrinks back to the new contour
Loose, hanging skin after weight loss or pregnancyTummy tuckOnly surgery removes excess skin — liposuction cannot shrink it
Separated stomach muscles after pregnancyTummy tuckMuscle repair is part of a tummy tuck, not liposuction

If your BMI is well above the healthy range, weight loss surgery may serve you better first.

THE PROCEDURE

How does liposuction work?

The operation takes 1 to 3 hours under general anaesthetic, depending on the number of areas.

1

Marking

Your surgeon marks the areas to treat with you standing, so the plan matches how your body looks upright.

2

Fat removal

Through tiny incisions, tumescent fluid is introduced and fat is removed with fine cannulas — with VASER or HD techniques where they suit you.

3

Compression

The incisions are closed and a compression garment is fitted. It reduces swelling and helps the skin settle to its new shape.

YOUR HOSPITAL

Where is my liposuction performed?

Your operation and your hospital nights take place at Anatolia Hospital in Antalya — one of NewMe’s contracted institutions, accredited by Temos for Quality in Medical Care. An anaesthetist looks after you during surgery and the hospital’s nursing team cares for you around the clock while you are an inpatient. After discharge you recover in a hotel nearby, with our coordinators checking on you until your fit-to-fly review.

RECOVERY

What is recovery like after liposuction?

Week 1

Compression garment worn continuously and walking from day one. Bruising and swelling are normal. Most patients fly home around day 5.

Week 2–6

Desk work from around week 1 and light cardio from weeks 2–3. Compression continues as your surgeon advises.

Month 3

Most swelling has gone and your new shape is clearly visible.

Month 6

Residual swelling resolves and the skin settles; final definition — especially with HD techniques — is judged now.

SAFETY

What are the risks of liposuction?

Liposuction is one of the most common cosmetic operations, but like any surgery it carries risks. Your surgeon goes through them with you before you book, and we recommend reading the NHS overview of liposuction as well.

Common and expected

Bruising, swelling, soreness and numbness in the treated areas for several weeks.

Less common

Lumpy or uneven contours, loose skin, fluid collections, infection and changes in skin colour.

Rare but serious

Fat entering the bloodstream (fat embolism), blood clots, injury to deeper structures, and reactions to the anaesthetic.

How we reduce your risk: keeping the volume removed within international safety limits; a full health check before surgery; experienced anaesthesia and 24-hour nursing; compression, early walking and clot prevention; and a fit-to-fly review before you travel home.

FOR UK PATIENTS

Planning liposuction in Turkey from the UK

NHS and liposuction

Liposuction for cosmetic reasons is not available on the NHS, so UK patients have it privately, at home or abroad.

Direct flights, about 4 hours

Antalya has direct flights from London, Manchester, Birmingham and other UK airports. UK passport holders can visit Turkey visa-free for up to 90 days.

What your package covers

The operation, your hospital nights, VIP transfers between airport, hospital and hotel, your compression garment and follow-up. Your recovery hotel and flights are booked separately.

Aftercare back home

You fly home with an English-language surgical report for your GP, and send photo check-ins over WhatsApp long after you return.

New to surgery abroad? Our step-by-step guide for UK patients walks you through the whole journey, and the NHS advice on cosmetic surgery abroad is worth reading before you decide — we are happy to answer every question on that checklist.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Does the fat come back after liposuction?

Removed fat cells are gone permanently. Remaining cells can still grow with significant weight gain, so a stable weight protects your result — but treated areas stay proportionally slimmer.

How much fat can be removed?

The amount is limited by international safety standards and tailored to your body and health. Liposuction is contouring — large volume loss is the job of weight loss, or weight loss surgery where appropriate.

What is the difference between VASER and classic liposuction?

VASER uses ultrasound energy to loosen fat before removal, which is gentler on surrounding tissue and suits fibrous areas and fine definition. Your surgeon recommends the technique that fits your areas and goals.

Will liposuction tighten loose skin?

No — liposuction removes fat, and skin only shrinks back as far as its own elasticity allows. If loose skin is part of the picture, a tummy tuck, arm lift or thigh lift is the honest answer.

Can liposuction be combined with other procedures?

Yes — Lipo 360° with a tummy tuck is the most common post-weight-loss plan, and harvested fat can be transferred to the buttocks in the same session (BBL).

How long do I wear the compression garment?

Usually for around 6 weeks, day and night at first. Your surgeon adjusts this to the areas treated.

How long do I need to stay in Antalya?

Around 5 days: two nights in hospital, then a short hotel stay until your fit-to-fly review.

When will I see the final result?

Your new shape shows within weeks, but swelling takes 3–6 months to settle fully, so final definition is judged at around month 6.

Which hospital is the surgery performed in?

At Anatolia Hospital in Antalya, one of NewMe’s contracted institutions, accredited by Temos for Quality in Medical Care.

Is the hotel included?

No. Your package covers the operation, your hospital nights, VIP transfers, your compression garment and follow-up. Hotel nights are booked separately, and we can arrange a hotel close to the hospital for you.
