THE PROCEDURE
How the gastric balloon works

Placement
The deflated balloon is placed endoscopically through the mouth under light sedation — or swallowed as a capsule (Allurion), with no endoscopy or sedation at all.

Filling
The balloon is filled with sterile saline, occupying space in your stomach so you feel full with smaller meals and stay satisfied longer.

Removal or passing
After 6–12 months the balloon is removed endoscopically — or, with Allurion, empties itself and passes naturally after around 16 weeks.
