What is gynecomastia surgery?
Gynecomastia surgery (male breast reduction) removes enlarged breast tissue in men to create a flatter, firmer chest. Most men have a mix of fat and firm glandular tissue behind the nipple; the fat responds to liposuction, but the gland only goes when it is removed directly. Why the gym can’t fix it: true gynecomastia is glandular, often hormonally driven, and does not respond to diet or chest training. Pseudo-gynecomastia is fat only. THE PROCEDURE
How does gynecomastia surgery work?
The operation takes 1 to 2 hours under general anaesthetic. Our standard for mixed gynecomastia follows three steps.

Liposuction layer
Fine cannulas remove the fatty layer and blend the edges of the chest into a natural, athletic contour.

Gland excision
The firm glandular disc is removed through a small incision at the lower edge of the areola — the step that makes the result permanent.

Compression vest
Incisions are closed with fine sutures and a compression vest is fitted. It shapes the result and reduces swelling over the following weeks.

What is recovery like after gynecomastia surgery?
Week 1
Tightness rather than pain, managed with simple medication. Walking from day one, the compression vest worn day and night, and a final check before you fly home around day 5.
Week 2–3
Desk work from about a week. Swelling and bruising settle steadily; light cardio usually returns in weeks 2–3.
Week 4–6
Chest training and heavier lifting return with your surgeon’s clearance, once the vest phase is complete.
Month 3–6
Residual swelling fades and the final contour shows. The areola scar continues to soften and fade over the first year.

What are the risks of gynecomastia surgery?

Common and expected
Swelling, bruising and tightness; temporary numbness around the nipple; a firm, swollen feeling under the skin for several weeks while the chest settles.
Less common
A fluid or blood collection (seroma or haematoma), slight unevenness between the two sides, contour irregularities, and a thicker or more visible scar.
Rare but serious
Changes in nipple sensation that do not recover, infection, blood clots in the legs or lungs, and reactions to the anaesthetic.

The removed gland does not grow back, so results are typically permanent at a stable weight. If a hormonal or medication trigger exists, your surgeon flags it at assessment so the cause is addressed too.
How do I know if I need liposuction, gland removal or both?
Your surgeon assesses this from your photos and examination. Most men have a mix of fat and gland, which is why the standard operation combines liposuction with direct gland excision.
Will people be able to tell I had surgery?
